- Primary Care Optometrist - Clinical Instructor of Ophthalmology
Description
As an Optometrist at the Ross Eye Institute, you will provide full-scope optometric services—examining, diagnosing, managing primary care patients and referring those with a variety of ocular and visual conditions to sub-specialists (low vision, contact lens, binocular vision) and surgeons when indicated. You will collaborate closely with ophthalmologists and the broader eyecare team to ensure seamless, comprehensive patient care.
Requirements
Key Responsibilities
Perform comprehensive eye examinations
Diagnose and manage common ocular conditions and appropriately refer complex or surgical cases to ophthalmology subspecialists
Fit and prescribe disposable soft contact lenses
Conduct emergency examinations on a case-by-case basis and post-operative cataract surgery examinations
Educate patients on ocular health, treatment options, and preventive care
Maintain accurate, timely documentation of patient care in compliance with regulatory standards
Participate in quality improvement, research initiatives and educational program for Ophthalmology residents and medical students
RoleSpecific Performance Metrics
Average 20-25 comprehensive exams per day (depending on site and patient demands)
Complete documentation within 48 hours of each patient encounter
Attend weekly grand rounds education series hosted by Department of Ophthalmology
Contribute to department quality improvement initiatives quarterly
Preferred Attributes
Optometric Residency Training Experience
Fellowship of American Academy of Optometry
Experience working directly with ophthalmologists across subspecialties
Comfortable in highvolume, multiprovider environments
Interest in research, teaching, or clinical education
Work Environment & Schedule
Monday – Friday, 8:30 AM – 4:30PM
No call hours
Multisite coverage (Buffalo, Amherst, Orchard Park) with technical staff support provided
