UVA Health is pleased to announce the opportunity for a visionary and collaborative leader to serve as the Medical Director of the new Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) Center of Excellence. This pivotal role will lead the Center’s mission to provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary care and advance research for EDS and associated hypermobility spectrum disorders.

The EDS Center of Excellence
The EDS Center of Excellence at UVA Health aims to be a national leader in the diagnosis, management, and research of Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) and associated hypermobility spectrum disorders (HSD). The Center will provide patient-centered, multidisciplinary care and foster a robust research program to advance understanding and treatment of these complex conditions.
Medical Director
The Medical Director will bring a depth of understanding and expertise about EDS and its treatment to develop and implement the strategic vision for the EDS Center while overseeing and coordinating the highest standards of patient-centered multidisciplinary care. They will advocate for the unique needs of EDS/HSD patients, ensuring their voices are heard while building the infrastructure to support research initiatives to advance the understanding and treatment of EDS/HSD.
The Medical Director will build collaborative relationships at UVA Health, the University, community, and nationally. They will productively engage key stakeholders, including patients, families, healthcare providers, researchers, and funding agencies. Additionally, they will ensure efficient administrative oversight, including staffing, budgeting, and regulatory compliance.
Qualifications
The inaugural EDS Center Medical Director will be a nationally-recognized expert, with deep understanding of EDS and experience treating EDS patients. They will have both vision and strong management abilities – able to inspire others with their vision for the Center and capable of realizing that vision.
Additionally, the successful candidate will have:
- Medical Degree: MD or DO with board certification in a relevant specialty.
- Experience: Minimum of 7 years of clinical experience.
- Research Expertise: It is important that the successful candidate can build the infrastructure to support a robust EDS/HMD research portfolio at UVA in the coming years.
- Leadership Skills: Demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, manage complex projects, and drive strategic initiatives.
- Communication: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Commitment to Diversity: Dedication to fostering an inclusive and diverse environment for patients, staff, and the community.
- Organizational Skills: Strong organizational and administrative skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects effectively.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to identify and address complex clinical and administrative challenges.
As the Center will engage a strong multidisciplinary team of practitioners, UVA Health is glad to accept applications from physician leaders in any EDS-related specialty. UVA Health has particular strength in treating pediatric EDS patients, so practitioners that focus on adult EDS patients are especially encouraged to apply.
